Career Paths & Job Opportunities for a Home Health RN

Home health nurses provide physician-directed medical care to individuals residing in their homes. This care includes administering medications, treating wounds, and monitoring vital signs. Some advantages of choosing a career in home health are getting to work in a less clinical environment, building relationships with patients and their families, and enjoying a flexible schedule.

The goal of a home health nurse is to keep patients comfortable and safe at home while helping them return to optimal and independent daily functions.

Here are a few opportunities available to RNs who are considering a career in home health.

Home Health Nurse Opportunities

1- Home Health Agencies:

As a home health agency employee, an RN’s duties are limited to managing patient medical care that requires the caregiver to be trained and licensed. Most home health agencies require a BSN with a minimum of two years’ experience.

2- Independent Care Giver:

When an RN works as an independent caregiver has more freedom with tasks performed in the patient’s home. Independent caregivers can assist with medical care, but they can also help with needs around the house, such as changing a light bulb or picking up groceries.

3- Community Facilities:

RNs that assist with home health administered from a community facility has a more limited medical role with more managerial responsibilities, including coordinating patient care among several agencies.

4- Hospitals:

When a patient no longer needs inpatient care but still needs monitoring, upon discharge the hospital can assign a home health nurse to follow up with the patient at home to complete the course of care.
