Celebrating National OT Month

The month of April is dedicated to bringing awareness to the profession of Occupational Therapy. Occupational Therapists (OT) are Allied Health practitioners that individuals, who have various disabilities and injuries, by equipping them with skills to improve their quality of life in everyday activities.

 

The field of Occupational Therapy is known for work stability and flexibility and can be a rewarding career for individuals who possess an innate ability to problem-solve and communicate effectively with empathy.

 

The History of Occupational Therapy

 

It is said that Occupational Therapy dates back to 100 B.C., when it was recorded that OT was used to treat mental and emotional disorders with massages, exercises, baths, and music. OT then became a recognized practice that spurred William Rush Dunton Jr to establish the National Society for the Promotion of Occupational Therapy, which is now called the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

 

Occupational Therapy versus Physical Therapy

 

Physical Therapy was founded in improving a patient’s ability to move and Occupational Therapy is rooted mental health and rehabilitation. Physical therapy focuses on improving movement, mobility, and function, while occupational therapy focuses on helping a person perform daily tasks more easily.
